The East Monkton Church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on the basis of 1) its social history, as an important community gathering place for religious and secular activities, and 2) its architecture, as an example of a Greek Revival church building. This nomination was made under the “Religious Buildings, Sites, and Structures in Vermont” Multiple Property Listing, within the historic context of “Religious Trends 1615-1950.” The church’s level of significance is local. Its period of significance began in 1866 with the building’s construction, and ended circa 1960 when use of the building for religious and secular purposes largely stopped. Active use began again in the mid-1970s and continues today.
